I-Cubs Walk-Off Indians for Game Five Victory

July 22, 2023

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (55-38) had their sixth walk-off win of the year to beat the Indianapolis Indians (44-50) by a score of 5-3, Saturday at Principal Park.

Neither team scored for the first three innings, as starters Hayden Wesneski and Jared Jones kept the opposing offenses off the board. Wesneski was locked in on the mound, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight.

He got two runs of support in the fourth inning, as Iowa opened the scoring with a two-run single from Alexander Canario. They were the only two runs Iowa would score against Jones, who allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four in his 4.0 innings.

Indianapolis cut their deficit in half in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Josh Palacios, his second long ball of the series. Another home run in the eighth gave the Indians the lead, as Grant Koch clubbed a two-run shot to make it 3-2.

Iowa got the tying run to second in the eighth but couldn’t bring it in. Down to their final out in the ninth, Edwin Ríos clubbed a three-run home run to earn a walk-off victory and at least a series split.
