When the Indianapolis Colts hired Shane Steichen, everyone was excited about his prowess as an offensive coach. How is he doing so far in his first year?

When the Indianapolis Colts hired Shane Steichen, it was about more than the Xs and Os. The Colts wanted a coach that could lead and create a culture of accountability within the organization. While Steichen definitely fits those requirements, it didn’t hurt that he’s considered an offensive mastermind, and Indy’s offense was abysmal a year ago.
After arriving in Indianapolis, Steichen made it clear that he would call the offense’s plays. Through 10 games, that’s exactly what Steichen has done, and Indy’s offense has greatly improved since last season. The Colts are averaging 336.1 yards a game, 14th in the league, and 24.2 points a game, ninth in the NFL.
Recently, ESPN’s team of NFL writers took a look at how each team’s play caller performed in the first half of the season. For Steichen, it was pretty much all good things said.
Shane Steichen receives praise for turning around Colts offense
ESPN’s Stephen Holder explained that under Steichen’s leadership, Indianapolis’ offense has been much more productive than expected. Holder praised Steichen for keeping the offense rolling despite challenges like losing Anthony Richardson or not having Jonathan Taylor in the first four games. Holder did, however, accuse the Colts of being less aggressive with Gardner Minshew under center after his string of turnovers.
That’s why Holder argued that the key for Indy’s offense in the second half of the season will be Gardner Minshew trusting his protection. Anyone who has watched the Colts this year knows that Minshew has a tendency to leave the pocket too quickly. Holder believes that if Minshew hangs in the pocket, the offensive line will protect him, and Indy will be able to complete more explosive passes. That will definitely be something to pay attention to as the 5-5 Indianapolis Colts try to go on a run and make the postseason.
