My Conversation with Joseph Perez of the Indy Octane

by indyprosports

Last week I had the opportunity to discuss the upcoming season with owner Joseph Perez of the Indy Octane. Here are the highlights of our discussion.

What made you choose Indianapolis as a spot to place the team?

Indianapolis is indeed a football and sports hub, making it a natural choice to include the A7FL among its roster of great sporting events. Additionally, as the owner of A7FL Cincinnati, introducing the competition in Indianapolis provides an exciting opportunity for both cities’ teams.

How would you describe A7FL football? I kind of look at is as football you would play after Thanksgiving dinner.

You are absolutely correct. The A7FL offers a thrilling and dynamic version of the sport and withh smaller team sizes and no pads, there’s an emphasis on safety and athleticism

How long have you been involved with the A7FL?

3 years

Do the players get paid? If so, without specifics, what is the range of the salary?

No, players do not receive payment. However, they compete for a $25,000 championship prize.

How does the team get to the away games? Bus? Individually? Hotel?

The team rents buses and vans for transportation. We do not typically require hotels since all our away games are to Cincinnati and Columbus, unless the team advances to the national final 4 or championship, in which case the league and team cover the expenses for flights and hotels.

You had open tryouts. How many people tried out for the team?

We had several tryouts and a total of around 50 guys came out.

Did you make the call on the cuts or was it a group decision?

Coaches made the decision on who they wanted on the team, base on skills and position needs

Would you rather be indoors at Grand Park or outdoors?

We will be indoors at Grand Park. In my opinion, the controlled environment makes it more exciting, especially when the fans get loud.

Can you talk about Coach Carter? Why was he chosen to be the first head coach of the Octane?

Coach Carter brings over 30 years of football experience and has earned several championships, making it an obvious choice to bring someone of his caliber into the organization as the head coach. However, due to major health issues, Coach Carter will not be involved with the team this season.

What’s your outlook for the upcoming season?

A7FL football differs from playing 11-man football, so I anticipate it will take the rookie team some time to adjust to the fast pace. However, I am confident that we will win enough games to get the team noticed.

I would like to thank Joseph for his time. I hope the Octane make a big impression in it’s inaugural season. I am looking forward to seeing a game.
