Rick Carlisle Wants Pacers to Play Better Defense. ‘Even Dating a Pretty Girl Gets Boring’

by Evan Frank

Pacers coach Rich Carlisle isn’t entirely impressed by his team’s offensive achievements this season. On Saturday, Carlisle spoke to the media and said his team’s historic offense is “fun,” but felt the defense has been lacking.

“Being historically great is fun, but even dating a pretty girl gets boring after a while if she can’t guard anyone,” Carlisle said.

The Pacers rank first this season with an offensive rating of 121.8, according to NBA Advanced Stats. However, Indiana is 28th out of 30 teams in defensive rating at 120.4. For comparison, the Minnesota Timberwolves are first at 108.1.

If the Pacers maintain their current rate, they would be second all-time for points per game at 126.1 (1981-82 Denver averaged 126.5) but they’re giving up the sixth most points per game in NBA history at 124.8.
