Colts’ E.J. Speed Fined for Late Hit on Matthew Stafford

by Kevin Hickey

Indianapolis Colts linebacker E.J. Speed was fined $10,927 for the late hit he applied on Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford during the Week 4 loss.

Speed’s late hit came on the very first drive of the game. The Colts defense had a chance for a quick stop to begin the game as Stafford scrambled on a third-down play. As Stafford cleared the boundary to the sideline, Speed made a poor decision to hit the veteran quarterback.

It was an easy call for the officials to make, and it extended the drive for the Rams, who eventually scored a touchdown, taking advantage of the extra opportunities.

Speed is the second Colts player in as many weeks to receive a fine from the league office. Defensive end Kwity Paye was fined for unnecessary roughness during the Week 3 win against the Baltimore Ravens. No flag was thrown on that play, though.
