Anthony Richardson got some great advice Friday. What else do you think Peyton Manning would offer?
Manning joined ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” to discuss NFL Week 1 issues, and casually mentioned that he and the Indianapolis Colts’ new quarterback traded text messages.
“About 20 minutes ago, I texted Anthony Richardson and said, ‘Good luck,'” Manning said. “He wrote back: ‘Any advice?’
Of course, Manning has more than one suggestion:
∎ “Be smart, not scared.”
∎ “Take what the defense gives you. You don’t need to force anything.”
∎ “Completions, completions, completions.”
∎ “Have fun out there.”
Manning realizes Richardson has a tough road this season. As a rookie in 1998, Manning played all season for a 3-13 Colts team, and he set an NFL rookie record by throwing 28 interceptions.
“Great memories,” he joked.
Manning also had advice for the rest of the Colts, including coach Shane Steichen: “We need to run the ball. We need to get into the plays he’s comfortable doing. Put him in the right situations. … It would help if the defense stepped up and played well.”
The Colts open at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
